Self-care allows me to recharge, manage stress, and remain fully present for my students and colleagues. Prioritizing self-care throughout the term is crucial not only for my well-being, but also for sustaining the energy and empathy needed to be an effective educator. I do not skim out on pouring into my cup. It allows me to have more to pour from!
To support my well-being, I incorporate several practices into my daily routine. I meditate every day, which helps me start each morning with focus and a sense of calm. I love @robertgabriel108 on Instagram. He posts daily meditations focused on Deepak Chopra's teachings. I also try to get monthly massages or reiki to release stored stress. When that doesn't work, I hit up the Laugh Factory for a good laugh! Comedic relief has been a lovely way to shake off signs of burnout.
I decorated my office to feel welcoming and a space where I can meditate and reset. Students have also shared feeling calm in my office.
I also love spending time with my dog, Taz. He is a little sassy ball of cuteness. He offers a refreshing break and a reminder to enjoy the present moment.
Connecting with family and friends regularly provides a strong support network, grounding me and offering a much-needed space for relaxation and joy. I am working on not feeling guilty when I prioritize time to connect. Instead, I see it as a way to grow capacity for the week.
When I feel overwhelmed, I make sure to take time to reset, whether by going for a walk, practicing deep breathing, or simply stepping away to clear my mind. These habits allow me to take care of myself so I can stay fully engaged and resilient throughout the term.
Take a breath, soften your shoulders and release.
